3.5/5 ★ – benhmedia's review of Hohokum.
It’s very rare that a video game can be carried by vibes alone, but this is one game that succeeds in doing so for me. It feels less like a traditional video game and more like a large artsy playground. There are objectives, but they are never explained and sometimes unclear. Because of this, I can fully understand why some people would bounce off of this one quickly. But personally, I was mesmerized by its colorful and wholesomely surreal worlds. It’s a game that’s bursting with creative ideas and interactions at every corner, and elevated by incredibly pleasing music and sound design. “who thinks of this stuff??”, I kept asking myself.
The crazy thing is, while I played long enough to experience most of what Hohokum has to offer, I don’t think I achieved whatever end state this game has. There were a couple of areas where I couldn’t quite figure out what needed to be done. And you know what? I don’t care. Whether or not you can “beat” this game, that didn’t seem like the most important objective here. It’s a game that dazzled me with fun worlds and quirky interactions that brought out my childlike sense of wonder. It may not be the most exciting or compelling game out there, but it did enough to stand out and bring some joy into my life.
