3/5 ★ – benhmedia's review of Pokémon Picross.
I’ve known about Picross/nonagram puzzles for a while now, but discovering this lost game through a YouTube video was the push I needed to finally give them a try. Overall this is a pretty decent introduction to this type of puzzle, and has lead me to trying out more fleshed out Picross games on modern hardware. It’s also quite novel to be playing a lost Pokémon game that’s unofficially available to the public in a mostly finished state. I will say, the game is pretty barebones. There is a full original soundtrack, though most of the music is quite monotonous and I end up playing on mute. It’s also easier than the average Picross game to guess what tile to click on when you’re stuck, since each tile has multiple pixels that clearly lead into other tiles. I have mixed feelings about the timer. It adds a nice challenge, and incentivizes being careful. However, being careful AND fast ends up stressing me out after a while, which seems to go against the point of nonagram puzzles.
This is getting pretty ramble-y for what is essentially a simple & fun Pokémon puzzle game. Not the most interesting Pokémon spinoff, but it is quite addicting, and I have it to thank for finally playing a Picross game.
