4/5 ★ – birdiepeach's review of Kirby Super Star Ultra.

8/10 I played Kirby here and there when I was younger (specifically Kirby's Adventure on NES and when I tried out Squeak Squad on a former classmate's DS), but I never really completed a Kirby game even though I thought it was fun as a kid. A friend of a friend suggested I should get back into them, and he recommended me Super Star Ultra. I've read it's supposedly a good introduction game for newcomers to the franchise, so I thought I'd give it a go from star to finish... Wow! This game really surprised me! The game starts off stupidly easy, but it becomes very challenging by the time you get to the Milky Way Wishes mission. One of the arena modes in this game as super hard, like, you have to really understand how each boss works in order to beat it. The final boss is especially an ass. If you're familiar with Smash's boss rush mode, it's similar. Kirby games in general seem to have a lot of replay value because of his copy ability. The game allows you to play with the abilities you prefer. I find myself enjoying bomb, cutter, and fire Kirby a lot. One addition to this game that I really enjoyed is playing Metaknight. He's super quick and fun. I'd personally love to see a standalone Metaknight game. Also, not only is this game a good introduction to Kirby, but I feel like it's a good intro to 2D platformers/side-scrollers in general. I grew up on 3D platformers, such as Spyro (PS1 trilogy) and SMG, but when it comes to playing something like New Super Mario Bros., I really suck lol. The fact that Kirby has a risk-free jump helps me and I feel like it has trained me for when I get back to Metroid Zero Mission. I don't think stories are the highlight of the Kirby franchise (based on this game), but do not be fooled if you think the lore of this series is simple. I discovered it's actually quite complicated. I really had fun with this game, and it's made me interested in checking out other Kirby games. I already put Star Allies on my watchlist on YT (because I don't have a Switch). **SPOILER TERRITORY** So I now understand who Marx is outside of SSBU lol. At first he looked like he could be a friend of Kirby's (he's shaped like one!) but then we find out he's a sinister, manipulating entity. That laugh... This character creeps me out. Honestly, for a villain I love his design. I also thought Galacta Knight was just another form of Metaknight until now. I think he'd make a cool echo fighter in Smash. **END OF SPOILERS**
