4.5/5 ★ – blskier's review of Into the Breach.

Second rougelike I’ve played behind hades, and after I beat it for the first time I worried there wasn’t replayability here. There’s no new story beats or specific incentive to keep playing other than trying out the achievements / challenges. I had started this game on hard which is a pretty brutal challenge, and was mostly satisfied with what I had gotten out of it finally beating it. Was that enough? Something in my brain has kept pulling me back into this game. Maybe I can beat it with a different type of mech. Maybe I can do it without getting any damage to my grid. Maybe I should try for some more achievements. I began playing with more and more mechs, going for more and more achievements. The diversity in mechs is astounding, and completely changes how you play each run. Suddenly I have more desire to keep playing, regardless of their not being more story or other incentives! As of writing, I have 5 wins under my belt with all different types of mechs, and 34/70 achievements completed. It might not sound like much, but on hard this has been quite difficult and has taken nearly 50 hours. I typically don’t return to games once I review / rank them, but I truly believe I will continue to pick this one up for a handful of hours here and there, especially while watching sports or playing in between other games. I’m not sure when I’ll delete it or declare myself done, but there’s a comfort in knowing I can always come back and try out a different challenge or mech. I’m shocked by how much I have ended up enjoying this game.
