3/5 ★ – blskier's review of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.
I played this through Switch Online SNES super Mario all stars pack - this is the way to play this no doubt.
The people who made this are some sadistic pricks. This feels like an insanely hard dlc for Mario bros, which I can appreciate, but man it had me laughing at how insane some of the ideas are. Go watch a video of 8-4 if you’ve never seen it.
Super Mario all stars version is way to go with essentially unlimited retries as continues place you at the level you were on, a glorious improvement over the original. Without that - no way in hell I would ever beat this game.
Similar to the first game there is a “tougher” adventure at the end - the regular game was more than enough for me. I read online there’s a ninth regular world, but I didn’t get it because I used a warp between worlds (which sadistically in this game sent me back three worlds, and I kept going in that playthrough because why the heck not I should feel the pain). Anyone who beat this on NES without continues is truly impressive.
Overall I liked it better than the original because it always kept me on my toes+ the movement is way better (you can actually change directions mid air! I played as Luigi not sure if unique to him) but again without the super Mario all stars improvements and generous continues not sure it would be playable.
