4/5 ★ – bokonon764's review of Cuphead.
Cuphead is a game I heard a lot about before playing, it seemed like everyone was raving about it; it’s extreme difficulty, the old timey cartoon art and music, fun combat….Cuphead lives up to that hype, no question.
This was maybe my third attempt at beating it? I think I have to concede defeat. Maybe one day I’ll try again, but for now, I’m callin it quits on this one. I didn’t even get to the same boss that I couldn’t get past last time I tried, just one I decided I was so sick of fighting, one that I had beaten before. (It’s the giant robot, Dr. Wiley ripoff guy, in case you were wondering)
I just can’t keep playing a game that’s this frustrating right now. That being said….
Cuphead is so much fuckin fun. It’s essentially a game of bosses, with the occasional platforming level. You play as Cuphead or Mugman, (Ms. Chalice as well, if you have the DLC) two hapless friends who unwittingly make a deal with the Devil, who commissions them to go out and collect the souls of his debtors. You’re dropped in an over world with a series of boss fights in each section. The art an music is on fucking point, the studio that made the game, MDHR, swung for the fences and 100% hit the mark.
The controls are simple and easy to pick up, but the different bosses make you master every move if you want to beat the Devil. It’s platforming bosses, and you deal damage by firing projectiles from Cuphead or Mugmans fingers. You start with one that fires forward facing only, but other can be unlocked for a variety of strategies and uses. Couch co-op is available, though I never gave it a shot, as I mostly just play games alone. I’m sure it greatly elevated the fun though.
I like difficult games, and I’m not sure I’d say this is the most difficult game I’ve played, it’s just so fuckin frustrating. Don’t let that discourage you though, if you like a challenge, give this a try. Such a creative work of art.
