1.5/5 ★ – bokonon764's review of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP.
The remake of a cult classic, Lollipop Chainsaw RePop has been on my radar for a bit. I was bored the other day, so I bought it, and I feel pretty disappointed. It’s a mess, especially the menus. But the game itself feels pretty weak, too. I was surprised, because I’ve never heard a negative thing about the combat of this game, but I felt that it was pretty bad.
Lollipop Chainsaw definitely has a sense of humor. The game is about a teenaged, cheerleading, zombie hunter, whose boyfriends talking, severed head is attached to her hip. She fights with a chainsaw, if that wasn’t apparent. Fan service is definitely a focal point of this game, but like Bayonetta, its goofy tone and complete lack of self seriousness certainly changes how the hyper sexual fan service stuff comes across.
I just found the combat to be stale as fuck. There’s really not enough defensive moves; maybe you unlock some later on, but playing through hard mode feels like the move set is missing several tools.
The realization that weapons, moves, etc., unlocked through the story can’t be used in earlier areas is frustrating, and the things unlocked in the store, I just couldn’t be bothered to care about. There’s very little fluidity in the combat, although, it’s one of those games that sort of felt that it was maybe just a me problem, like I just wasn’t getting it. But I don’t know, on the other hand, I think it simply plays very poorly.
On the remake side of things: from what I understand from reading reviews, the menu issues are a thing confined to the remake. If a combo is purchased in the store, it can’t be found in any menu, at least I couldn’t find it. Displays in inventory menus are obviously supposed to be there, but they aren’t; makes it hard to keep track of things. Apparently some of the licensed music is missing this time around; seems a bit cheap, because the licensed music in this game is great. Really, all the music is great, one of the strongest qualities of the game.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is both worth what they’re charging, but it’s alright; very funny, a goofy good time…maybe just play it on easy? I don’t know, I bailed on it cus I no longer felt like playing it, simple as that.
Yeah, fun and goofy, but a fuckin mess. Maybe one day I’ll try and play the original, see if it’s better, or worthy of its cult status.
