1.5/5 ★ – bokonon764's review of Mighty No. 9.

I was really looking forward to this game when I downloaded it. I don’t know, I guess the thumbnail title on the store screamed “hidden gem” to me. But alas, it’s not great. A Mega Man ripoff from Keiji Inafune, who worked heavily on the Mega Man series as an artist, character designer, and eventually, a producer. Which maybe means it’s not a ripoff, but whatever, it’s essentially shittier Mega Man. Like Mega Man, Mighty No. 9 is a 2S side-scrolling platformer. Through the first level, I thought it was alright. You play as a robot guy, shoot lasers, absorb enemies, air dash, it’s all standard fair. It’s not until all 8 of the levels are opened up simultaneously and the difficulty spikes that this games holes become apparent. The physics of the platforming are just terrible and inconsistent. There’s this little slide the player character does when landing from a jump that I could never quite figure out; it never seemed apparent what caused it or how to manipulate it as a game mechanic, I think it’s just shitty. Aside from that, the jumps and dashes feel solid when executed, but landing on platforms and hanging from ledges never feels quite right. Add to that, fall deaths take away the precious few lives you’re given, and they happen so quick. One could chalk all that up to an old school difficulty style, but I don’t know, I like extreme difficulty; I think this game just sucks. I do not recommend it. To anyone.
