1.5/5 ★ – bokonon764's review of Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal.
Good lord, this game is horny. I mean, that’s just like the whole game. I played this cus I played like a crossover of this series and some anime, I forgot what it was called; that crossover game was way better. This game just has no substance, other than dressing up the characters and playing through levels.
Combat is on the lesser side of fine; it doesn’t feel fluid enough to serve as a mindless hack and slash. Levels are bizarrely short, and I think that’s because the game is just so shallow the levels would feel too long if they weren’t so short. I’m sure there was a better way to say that, but who gives a shit.
There are a couple characters that had fun move sets, and with a little more substance, this could have been a much better game.
At the end of the day, the only real draw to play this game is to dress down anime girls. Which, if that’s your thing, more power to you; I’ve enjoyed a waifu in my time…it’s just that there’s just nothing else. No equipment to mess around with, no attributes, no mini games, just hack and slash and unlocking cosmetics.
Senran Kagura shares the problem a lot of anime and anime-inspired Japanese games in general in that the girls all seem like they’re supposed to be teenagers, so that’s weird. Just make them adults. Why can’t they make them adults? Well, the hard truth is the fact that the characters are teens is part of the draw. And that’s certainly a drag on this game for me.
