2.5/5 ★ – bokonon764's review of The House of the Dead: Remake.

The classic rail shooter remade for home consoles. Another cheap game in my back catalogue I thought I’d try. I don’t know, it’s the same familiar game, but without the light gun arcade controls, it’s not great. Arcade or console, I never really have figured out how to play this game effectively. I’m sure there’s some in-the-know way to play this game, but I’ve never figured it out. Nevertheless, it’s a pretty simple game, just shoot the zombies before they get you. The consistency of when the zombies go down has never made sense to me; sometimes a headshot puts them down in one, sometimes you gotta shoot that bad bitch 8 or 9 times, I don’t know what the deal is. It is cool to be able to play infinitely without putting quarters in. This game has relatively easy to find secrets, but never would have known playing the arcade version; getting to the second boss was enough of a feat for me. I guess you can lose eventually, I used too many continues one of my playthroughs and got a game over, but it’s a lot of continues. There’s a cool menu screen where you can look at the enemies and trophies. This remake also adds Horde mode, which is seemingly just more enemies. There was a lot more to do after I beat a couple runs of the game, but I settled for that and gave it a quick delete. Fun game to kill time, I bet it would be fun with a co-op partner. Overall, it’s not great, but whatever, I’d say give it a shot. This game did put me on a new project. I’m going to start watching video game movie adaptations and play the games alongside them. So I watched Uwe Boll’s adaption/prequel House of the Dead. It’s terrible, but it’s a fun project. Check out my Letterboxd for reviews as I do more, it’s under the same name, bokonon764.
