3.5/5 ★ – boo_jay_'s review of Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 was a game I never intended to buy. The main thing that pushed me to pick it up was I had an extra discount at work along with all the controversy at the time. Because of my extra discount I literally payed $15 for it. If I recall correctly I picked it up maybe 2 or 3 days after release?
I really enjoyed my experience in the game! However, it is not without its flaws. I did play this on a base PS4 so it is what it is.
Since the big patch a while ago I don’t have very many issues anymore but oh man, when I first was playing it was maybe an hour or two on a good day before a crash. Driving in this game is absolutely horrendous. It almost feels like the game punishes you for driving around. I like to think of it like an oboe, if you look at it the wrong way you’re gonna fuck it up. Driving feels like not only are you driving on ice, but also your tires have no tread and they’re covered in oil. The alternatives aren’t even that great; running around is incredibly slow in comparison along with the controls just being clunky in general and using the fast travel stations put on every corner triggers a loading screen that can cause up to a 5 minute wait before you can get going again.
The saving grace for this game is the incredibly well written main story line. Keanu Reeves does an amazing job as his role as Johnny Silverhand. I can’t imagine anyone else for the role. While the main story was well written, I do find it odd that while playing I felt that crime was okay but only if it was V doing the crime. I just wouldn’t look too closely at it. Another big gripe I have is wishing that the characters you’re able to romance just had a little more depth. Don’t get me wrong I had a very good time playing out those storylines, Kerry’s the most, but it’s just a bit disappointing that there’s not much else you can do with them after you finish up the story lines. The gigs and side jobs also get tedious after a while as most of them are just “loot this thing.”
Like I said, if you go into this game knowing nothing about it, you’re going to have a good time. I think that’s what really saved the game for me. I probably wouldn’t have bought it if I saw the original trailer for it and followed it since the beginning. In the end, I am glad I bought it! It was a really fun experience!
