5/5 ★ – brudanos's review of Tetris.
I remember, I was 3 years old and my aunts were babysitting me at my grandparents home. I sneaked into their room, opened a drawer and similar to Indiana Jones having a golden aura surround him as he opens a chest full of treasure, the OG game boy basked me in a similar light. I turned that brick on, saw the red light illuminate and heard that beautiful GameBoy start up sound. I was in love.
What game launched? You guessed it. Super Mario Land, and boy let me tell you. My life was for ever changed. But this isn't a Mario review and after being destroyed by those sphinxes and very irate sun, I dug into the drawer and found: Tetris.
Tetris is the godfather of the video games and it has earned that title through a very tumultuous past. If you ever have the chance, I recommend you watch The Story of Tetris by The Gaming Historian on YouTube. Everyone know about Tetris, the title page music, the organizing of L, T, Z, I and square block to interlock and aim for a high score. The increase in speed as you progress and the stress you feel when you make a wrong move and start seeing you blocks stack in a way that means almost certain failure. The thrill when you make some big moves and recover from that epic fail and the satisfaction when you have a well placed I fit perfectly and eliminate 4 entire rows as you yell. UNO! I mean .. TETRIS!
Tetris is the perfect video game, one that even decades after its release is still played at a casual and competitive level. No matter how many re-imaginings there are of Tetris, the OG game stands the test of time and is as much fun today as it was when it was released.
