4.5/5 ★ – bryansbane's review of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

I didn’t care for Call of Duty at the time, and I still don’t to this day, but there is no overstating how much of a behemoth Modern Warfare was. I was there Gandalf, I was there in 2007 when this game changed everything. I remember some kids at my school when I was 15 saying weeks before the release of Modern Warfare that it was going to take down Halo, I was certain they were idiots, but I was the idiot because Halo never topped Call of Duty again after this game released. Sprint, quick time to kill, loadouts, presteige…these were all new ideas for online shooters and to most a breath of fresh air from the likes of Halo and other less popular series online modes. It completely changed the game and retroactively made Halo feel like a game your grandma played. The campaign was also exhilarating with moments like “all ghillied up” that are still being talked about. This was THE product that launched the series into the zeitgeist and made it a yearly release to record sales for nearly 20 years. It’s still going, and I doubt we will ever see it stop. All the praise for the original Modern Warfare is well deserved.
