3.5/5 ★ – bryansbane's review of Destiny.

As a single player gamer my review for the Destiny titles is based only on the campaign they launched with that I played to completion. The hype for the first Destiny was quite grand considering this was Bungie’s first new outing since the Halo franchise. I wasn’t fond of the always online component, but I was willing to give them a shot. One of the best things I can say about Destiny is that is presentation is immaculate. The art style, music, level/enemy design and atmosphere painted pretty much exactly what my dream sci-fi experience would look like. It’s perfect. What was also perfect was Bungie’s signature gunplay. Experiencing this new world with friends is a memory burned into my brain. It’s surprising then, the the drawbacks made me leave rather quickly. The main story for Destiny is awful, if not incomplete. Nothing of substance really happens and more often than not it’s poorly written. It was hard to feel attached to any character. I actually love Peter Dinklage as Ghost, but he was forever patched out of the game in favor of Nolan North. There was a lot I loved about Destiny, but all of it came with a caveat. The structure being centered around online play and gear grinding also never really worked for me. I wanted more of that structured campaign goodness, but that was never really Bungie’s goal. Destiny was worth playing and a fond memory, but definitely not something I should have paid full price for.
