4/5 ★ – bryansbane's review of Doom 3.
DOOM 3 may be the black sheep of the series, but it was always awesome in my eyes. I vividly remember the time when this game was a big deal. You had to have a beefy computer to run it well and there was a movie coming out with Karl Urban and Dwayne Johnson. My dad and I saw it at the movie theater together.
As many already know DOOM 3 takes the series in a slower, more methodical direction of survival horror. It does retain much of its roots though, with the same enemies, guns and marine badassery you’d expect. It felt to me like one of the first games to make finding “data pads” or “notes” around the environment a thing. Really sold the atmosphere and textured in narrative that otherwise wouldn’t have been there.
I can’t recommend DOOM 3 fully to someone whose only played the recent balls to the wall glory kill shooters we’ve been playing for the last 10 years, but I can’t certainly recommend it as a great game in general.
