1/5 ★ – cha0sknightmare's review of TMNT.
Stylish but shallow; that’s the best way to describe TMNT on the PSP. Based on the 2007 animated film, the game tries to capture the tone and energy of said film, with mixed results.
Gameplay is split into two distinct styles. First up are the parkour sections, these are essentially extended QTEs, smartly dressed up as dynamic traversal sequences. They look good and animate smoothly, creating a real sense of motion, but they’re ultimately low-effort from a gameplay standpoint, often giving the illusion of choice without any real consequence, outside of the odd insta-fail section.
Then secondly, there’s the combat, which is... clunky and underwhelming. All four turtles play nearly identically, with a limited move set that suffers from inconsistent targeting and sloppy hit detection. Enemy AI is basic and repetitive, and the boss fights struggle to stand out, they all take place in the same generic arena and reuse attack patterns and gimmicks with little variation.
The level variety is equally disappointing, offering just three locales—the rooftops, a jungle, and a tower.. the game repeats these themes ad nauseam. Despite the short four-hour runtime, you’ll feel like you’ve seen everything the game has to offer within the first hour, and then spend the remaining time retreading the same ground with minimal evolution.
Finally there is a story here, it's half based on the movie, half not... but it's told with still images and carries little weight or intigue... ultimately making it forgetable.
In the end, TMNT for PSP has some style and a solid visual identity, but its shallow gameplay and repetitive design leave it feeling more like a missed opportunity than a memorable adventure.
