John Wick: Hex (2020) (PS4) (First Time Play)
(DNF: Did Not Finish)
Absolutely laughable. I knew this wasn't going to be my kind of game going in and it wore on my patience very quickly. A befuddling mess of a tactics shooter that takes the John Wick IP to the lowest of levels. How do you turn one of best action franchises of the past decade into this slow, tedious slog?
The only positive thing I can say about this is that Ian McShane and Lance Reddick return to voice their characters from the films. But it's a shame that the ugly renderings of their characters barely represent them and John Wick is silent, so they clearly couldn't get Keanu Reeves in for this garbage fire. Says a lot he would do Cyberpunk 2077 and not this.
It's a buggy, frustrating mess. Enemies would shoot me through walls, controls could be unresponsive and henchman seemed to just never stop respawning to the point a hallway just became a dumping ground of guns and bodies. The attempt and recreating the fast-paced and stylish action from the films is absolutely fucked in the form of a game like this. I have no idea what they were thinking. There is absolutely no excuse for this not to be a third person shooter. I could have maybe even overlooked the horrid art style if it was at least playable.
It was just endless corridors of the same enemies slowly inching towards you as your braindead and mute John Wick fumbles round like some geriatric on painkillers who crawled out of bed at the retirement home. None of the "Gun-Fu" is there, it's just blankly choosing where to shoot and hoping the bullets will hit which you have no control over.
John Wick has to be one of the biggest potential IPs to be adapted into a great video game right now. Done in the vein of Stranglehold or Max Payne with the films aesthetic and tone, it could have been incredible, instead, Hex is barely reminiscent outside of a few characters and neon lights in it's horrific and visual vomit of art design. Frustrating, slow and boring, everything John Wick shouldn't be. Hex is a glorified phone game that somehow made it to consoles. Garbage.
