4.5/5 ★ – daneh's review of Deltarune: Chapter 2.
This is undoubtedly some of Toby's best work so far. While I still prefer Undertale to some degree, I would be lying if I didn't say most of the dialogue, humor, gameplay, and set pieces were better in this game. And not to mention Deltarune Ch1, which, as much as I loved that game, it now feels like just a tiny look at what Deltarune truly was since its predecessor improves it in essentially every single way possible.
Something that I wish had been improved in the first Chapter of the game was the battle system. It was great and it had potential, but it needed a bit refinement. And it sure got some. Other party members are now way more useful on pacifist fights and they have something else to do apart from just defending while waiting for Kris to act (they now have the ability to do both a basic act maneuver and Ralsei's pacify spell was given much more functionality).
Settings are also way more interesting now, throughout the chapter, the focus is mostly on one style but new ideas keep popping out throughout the game and it never feels too same-y. Undertale might still be a bit better on this regard since it changes the whole area pretty often, this one with new enemies, mechanics, characters, etc, but that's not to undermine Deltarune Ch2 at all since it still has a lot going for it.
Characters and story are also something Undertale does better, though its still a sizable improvement from Chapter 1. New ones are added into the mix, and the new villain, Queen, is possibly one of my favorite characters in this game. She always improves every single scene she's in with amazing and very funny dialogue, personality, and sequences caused by her. The only thing I wish I had seen more character-wise is more Lancer. I get why he wasn't present most of the way but still, he was also great.
Overall, Toby really delivered! Amazing dialogue, gameplay, settings and characters, Deltarune is really shaping up to be an amazing experience the further it goes. Really curious to see where Toby will take the future chapters, excited to see the rest of the game.
