2.5/5 ★ – daneh's review of Sonic CD.
I'll be honest in confessing I do not know what the circumstances behind this game are, all I know is that Sonic 2 and Sonic CD were both being developed around the same time by different teams. And I think it really shows because both games feel very different in certain aspects, and personally I think Sonic CD ends up with the shorter end of the stick even if it's not a necessarily bad game in my opinion.
The game features a time travelling mechanic where you touch specific posts across the levels being labelled either "Past" or "Future" and then try to gather enough speed and momentum to perform a successful time travel and switch to a different variant of the same level – now I know doing time travelling stuff like this is necessary for the true ending but I barely ever wanted to do that because despite being a Sonic game, gathering enough speed here feels cumbersome and annoying due to the level design, it feels like you have to cheese your way through time travelling sometimes. And that's were the main issue with the game lies obviously, the level design can be weird and confusing and sometimes just bad honestly. Most of the times it's fine in my opinion and the game is fairly fun, but sometimes the levels can really halt progression and makes everything unnecessarily complicated, it's a lot like Sonic 1 in this regard but to a lesser degree.
Even though I'm not exactly itching to go for true ending and explore this game much further than a single playthrough, I'll say it wasn't as bad as I initially thought it would be, especially since I dislike the first Sonic game. It's also very short so sitting down and knocking down a few levels goes a long way of making progress which made this experience not drag out too long, which I appreciated because I might have started hating this game if I had to play it for much longer.
