3.5/5 ★ – djdheedhee's review of 20 Minutes Till Dawn.
Top-level: In my mind, this game is perfect for playing for just like 2-3 hours, but it's got enough depth in it that deep roguelike enjoyers can squeeze a few more hours out tinkering with builds. For that purpose, it's really well-done.
Vis/Audio: Vis is fine, Audio gets samey, turned it off after like 30 minutes to play something else in the background.
Narrative: N/A, container (5-second blip to give the gameplay some context)
Gameplay: Really satisfying, just on the first runs, I felt myself focusing and narrowing to a build, and the next runs, I had a totally different (overpowered) build, and the next runs, I switched to an experimental one with mixed results. All of them were satisfying to discover and play. I doubt I would enjoy nearly as much revisiting those builds, as the game is pretty easy to beat, and once you beat it with a build, playing with a build you know can win is just a bit bland. But the content for you to discover and use to build, from the incremental permanent upgrades, to character-specific upgrades, to in-game upgrade dependencies and synergies (I barely even got into synergies tbh), is so in-depth that if you enjoy roguelikes at any level, I'd say you could get at least a great hour out of this, maybe a good 2.
