2.5/5 ★ – djgirard's review of Inscryption.
A maddening descent
Incryption is a third of the game that I wanted it to be. The opening act is at time frustrating but compelling, with easy to grasp card mechanics and a mysterious world and narrative. Unfortunately these efforts are derailed by lackluster and underwhelming following acts. The deck building and card game elements are actually pretty good in the first act, but get unwelcome additions in the following parts of the game. I enjoyed the story going on, but it was fairly predictable and familiar if you’ve spent any time with a Creepypasta. I really enjoyed some of the more escape room-esque puzzle elements in the environment. The art style can be really stunning and creepy, especially in the first act when you only see the orange glow of your opponents eyes. While I wanted to love the whole thing, Inscryption is unfortunately a front loaded disappointment.
Best Bits: Incredible art | Effective and creepy atmosphere
Worst Bits: Frustrating setbacks | Weak second and third act
