3.5/5 ★ – djgirard's review of Miitopia.
Charm in minutiae
Miitopia is a charming easy little RPG with an emphasis on creativity and customization. The crux of the game is putting together a ragtag group of whatever Mii’s you create/have lying around and embarking on quests to save a medieval landscape. The turn-based combat is perhaps a bit too simple, but new classes, characters, and abilities try their best to keep things. It’s a great starting point for kids or people fresh to turn-based strategy. But the main appeal for me was the cute and goofy nature of the characters and the writing. I grew attached to my goofy little party and enjoyed watching them interact at the Inn. Things can be as silly and wild as you want them too. I named my thief Kickflip and had her gallivant across the land on a demon horse. It reminds me of a simpler and more dialed back version of Wildermyth. The fun focus on the collaboration of your party as well as their relationships with each other brings a unique vibe, similar to games like Tomodachi Life. The appeal wears off after a while, after previously fun tasks become rote, but I get the idea that it’s not a game meant to be played all the through, but rather picked up here and there to get a short fix of the characters you created.
Best Bits: Multiple levels of customization | Cute and charming art style and writing
Worst Bits: Mundanity can set in quickly
