3.5/5 ★ – djgirard's review of SOMA.

Maybe we shouldn't be so scared of AI after all... The story at the heart of SOMA is something pretty special. It takes quite a long time to really get going, but the last hour or two are quite impactful. A truly stellar horror ending - those are rare. It's such a shame that nearly all of the enemy encounters are just downright horrible. The AI somehow feels confusing and stupid at the same time. Rarely scary, it just became a process of finding out how to trick the AI or just run right past it. It's going for an Outlast/Alien: Isolation thing, but falls very short. It is still worth experiencing for the story, and some of the puzzles are clever, but maybe switch on that game mode where the enemies can't kill you. Best Bits: Tense and atmospheric | One of the truly great game horror narratives Worst Bits: Confusing and downright unfun enemy encounters Played On: PS5
