2.5/5 ★ – drifferx's review of Painkiller: Resurrection.
This is the fourth Painkiller game, and while it's worse than the previous three, there are a few things I'd like to talk about that I think might be interesting.
First, we need to understand that this is a fan-made project. And it shows. The game is broken, barely playable without downloading a few patches and tweaking the settings. It doesn't offer much new; most of the weapons and enemies are from previous games, it's a bit disappointing.
BUT, metal music has returned after being lost in the previous game, Painkiller Overdose. I think it's not exactly the full original soundtrack, but it has a few songs from it; it's way better than nothing.
Also, the levels are much longer. I don't know if that's a good thing, but it's there. I guess it's because it's intended to play with 2-3 friends, as the game says itself. What I find really curious about the level design is that they feel uncomfortable. Every surface has rocks, planks, or whatever, so you're always having to sort, jump, and move around stuff while walking or running. Furthermore, the developers had a passion for narrow paths. Stairs, corridors... almost claustrophobic. Same thing with steep slopes. I like to think this is all intentional, as an idea to make purgatory more realistic, but I don't know.
The story is very similar to the first Painkiller but it's even more narrative-oriented. I won't give anything away, but I just love the story in this game. The biblical-style figures are very faithful to the Book of Enoch, the Testaments, etc, and that's so cool. It's similar to Supernatural, the TV show. The cutscenes have a comic book style, which I think always looks good.
It's not a bad game once you can make it work on your PC but it's not worth it unless you're a fan of the series. Mainly because, if you want to try a Painkiller game, you should go for any of the first three.
My problem right now is that they just announced a new Painkiller game, and I'm super hyped, so I'm going to keep playing the rest of the series until it comes out because I'm so passionate about it as you can read.
Next stop, Painkiller Redemption. See you there.
