4.5/5 ★ – drifferx's review of Second Sight.
Second Sight is the perfect example of old-school games, if you consider PS2 old-school. A game made by passion and talent, from start to finish. It is incredibly ambitious, in every sense. I hate stealth games, so I shouldn't have enjoyed this one, but it's so good that I just gave in.
Since you have psychic powers in addition to weapons, there are plenty of ways to take out your enemies (if your stealth skills suck, like mine), making the gameplay super varied. It's not perfectly polished, it's true. But not because it has bugs or anything like that, but because things like turning around quickly could have felt better.
The dubbing may not be the best in the world, but the character animations are excellent. The facial expressions have that L.A. Noire feel, again, considering it's a PS2 game.
The story and characters are amazing, but I won't say much because that's perhaps the best part of the game. The narrative. It had me glued to the screen.
But the most striking aspect of the game is perhaps its technical aspect. Incredibly good stuff for a relatively small studio. For example, if you use a computer and then stop using it, in-game you'll see the same windows you had opened and the exact position of the mouse cursor. Many AAA games of that era couldn't do that. This is just one example, but I could mention a few.
Second Sight is what I miss about modern gaming. The intent to create not only the best game possible, but a unique one.
I quite understand why it didn't get a sequel. Back in the day, it must have been very difficult to stand out in the PS2's vast and amazing catalog. Or perhaps they thought this one didn't need a sequel. Who knows? Anyway, a great game.
I could talk about this game for hours, but it's worth playing. It would be unfair to enjoy it from reading a review or watching it on YouTube. I HIGHLY recommend it.
