3/5 ★ – drifferx's review of Wanton Destruction.
This expansion pack has a rather curious history: despite being created in 1997, it wasn't released until 2005. It's quite noticeable that it was never fully completed, Wanton Destructon is more of a playable build. This is evident in how some levels have paths leading to empty spaces (like certain train tracks or open areas) that are resolved with invisible walls. It's also apparent in how the objects are often not placed in a very inspired way on the floor. Furthermore, the lack of detail in some areas and textures would surely have looked better if the expansion had been revised and released back then.
That said, it maintains the essence of the base game, especially in terms of its labyrinthine nature and the and the inventiveness required to solve the puzzles. It doesn't add new weapons, but it replaces several enemies with even more racist ones, which make sense considering the game's concept and age, but it does diminish the demonic feel somewhat and their lines double up every time they speak for some reason, ending up drilling into your head. On the other hand, I believe the lighting is slightly better than in the base game.
Considering that it is an unfinished product and has its flaws, it is commendable that it is truly enjoyable, challenging, and immersive.
It is worth noting that it contains the "real" ending of Shadow Warrior and some new ones Lo Wang quotes, and for that we should be grateful.
