5/5 ★ – dugg98's review of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.
I cannot emphasise enough how much I enjoyed this game. An absolute joy from start to finish.
Great Ace Attorney: Chronicles is a collection of games from the Ace Attorney series. You play as Ryunosuke Naruhodo, a law student from Japan in the late 1800s. You play out multiple different trials and investigations as you go on this journey with the character.
I'd describe this game as a visual novel of sorts, with excellent style and charisma. The main gameplay is reading through dialogue of scenes and interacting with different characters and objects. You examine different pieces of evidence to try to understand crime scenes and figure out various mysteries.
But what really drove home just how good, not only this collection is, but this series as a whole is, was the characters and the overarching storyline that links it all together. Firstly, the characters in this game are so wonderfully different from each other, varying from over dramatic and eccentric to disturbing and villainous. I had characters make me laugh, make me stunned and make me smile with complete joy. And secondly, this collection has an overarching story that is present from the very beginning up until the very end. You are given clues and little signs that something bigger is going on but nothing to link it all together until towards the end. I adored this aspect and felt it gave the whole game such great meaning and there was a great satisfaction in finishing and finding out truly what happened. One of the main growings of the protagonist was his quest for the truth and is willingness to do anything for it, even if it meant his defendent would get in trouble. You truly were aligned to the main characters unwavering belief in the truth and I felt like I understood him entirely by then end.
All in all, an excellent collection that I will remember for a long, long time. This was my first experience in the Ace Attorney universe and I have plans to experience it further. 10/10
