4/5 ★ – dugg98's review of The Outer Worlds.
The Outer Worlds is a great RPG from a stellar studio. You can tell this is the same team behind Fallout New Vegas.
I really enjoyed the classic skill based system, which coupled alongside perks and companions, give this RPG great depth and replayability. I loved the different worlds you explored and the people you stumbled across. The choices I made throughout were made feel meaningful by changing the narrative in various ways, from small things like certain characters not being available in an area like they used to or larger things like whole factions getting wiped out.
The only weakness I feel this game has is its basic combat. The slow down time mechanic is nifty but lacks the charm of the VATS system used in fallout. Gunplay is decent but nothing to write home about and melee combat is incredibly generic. The combats saving grace is the scattering of science weapons you find in the game. These add interesting and humours effects to combat which I really enjoyed. You could shrink enemies with a shrink ray or turn enemies against each other with the mind control ray or put enemies into zero gravity using a gloop gun. Very unique weapons that were far more fun to use than anything else in the game.
Overall, I think Obsidian has cemented themselves as one of the best studios around when it comes to RPGs. This game mightn't hit the heights of Fallout New Vegas or some other modern RPGs but it has so much charm and so many interesting environments that it deserves a playthrough or two. Solid 8/10.
I am very excited to play both DLCs for this game and cannot wait to see what they do with the sequel, the Outer Worlds 2.
