3/5 ★ – dum_dum_demish's review of Luigi's Mansion.

I have alot of nastolgia for this game, and for a long time couldn't understand why people didnt hold it in such high regard as I did. I've played it recently, and I can kinda see why. I forgot how frustrating and annoying all ghosts are that aren't the gallery ghosts. Walking down the halls with respawning ghosts all over the place got old really fast. Did there really need to be mice everywhere as well? I thoroughly enjoy the majority of the gallery or boss ghosts though. They all have their own unique way of defeating them, much like solving a puzzle. Then you get to suck em up. Although the gameplay is a little brainless, I enjoy the frantic waggling of the analog sticks to more effectively drain the ghosts health. It feels like your on a bucking bronco and you know you just have to hold on long enough before you get bucked off. It never really gets old. What does get old immidiatley is collecting the boos. They aren't so bad in the early game, but once they start getting larger health pools, its hard to think of a more annoying gameplay requirement. You have to collect these things, and there's alot. Half of the game will be spent collecting boos. alot of time will be spent running from room to room, as they float through a wall while your trying to catch one. I hate it, I actually hate it. Thankfully the rest of the game is alot of fun. There are so many cool secrets to discover, and every room in the mansion is memorable. Every room and every gallery ghost has a unique solution to solving it. What I really enjoy the most though is meeting the ghosts. They all have unique personalities and cool designs. Just being able to witness them is a treat. The setting is fantastic, I love the look and atmosphere of the mansion. The look and design of the games characters and setting have stuck with me and make me feel nostalgic for these spaces. Accompanied by some really snazzy spooky music, I just find this game so memorable despite some of the obvious mediocrity of actually playing the game. And even though it's not the most compelling or complex gameplay loop, it is alot of fun. The feed back you get from using the poltergeist 3000 is really satisfying and doesnt get old, even if your doing the same thing over and over again. Playing luigis Mansion is like ordering the same sandwich at subway you always get. Even though it's the same thing, you still like the way it tastes. It's a good looking game as well. Very colorful and well animated . Its amazing how good some of these old gamecube games look still. Not much to say about its story. it's kinda cool that it's up to Luigi to save Mario, and it has some fun moments and reveals, but it's also just a Mario game. It's fun Saturday morning cartoon stuff, and I'm not really wanting anything more than that from a Mario game. Over all, a solid game that I have alot of nastolgia for.
