2/5 ★ – elk's review of Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two.

Why can't this expansion have a cooler name? I like the ancient gods but maybe a subtitle for part 2 to differentiate it. Like evilution and the plutonia experiment were cool ass names. Part one and part two? Lame af! Anyways, I didn't dislike it as others did but I'm not fully satisfied with my experience in this chapter. I'm just whelmed. Huge downgrade from the first one but it has some cool ideas and aesthetics, and the ending was pretty sick. The new enemies look like reskins but have really cool properties and are much better and abundant than the new ones we got in part 1, but they didn't show up as much. It ties to my overall biggest complaint about this expansion, the encounter design is just so boring. Fewer enemies, less variety, and I noticed a lot more hordes of random fodder enemies that you had to mow down. Why? I don't know. And the new weapon you get completely trivializes the marauder. The only encounters I found difficult were the bonus ones that were optional after the scripted mandatory ones. These are cool because they give you a skin. In the base game and in part 1, these secret encounters were hidden and didn't give prizes. Why? why reward for less exploration? whatever. The final boss is not fun. Spoilers if you care about what the final boss is. It's a giant marauder that regens health if it shoots you. The whole game plan is to wait for his green glow and shoot him and do the same combo again and again. You gotta get through 5 stages. No way, so boring. I love the marauder enemy but the final boss that is essentially you should be like any other rival fight: similar movesets. And since this game is all about fast movement, weapon switching, glory kills, and resource management why is the final boss a 'wait for the green opening 50 times' simulator? Couldn't it have been cool to have a mano a mano cool fight with the fella? he could also go around glory killing fodder enemies and chainsawing them for ammo. It would be like a deathmatch. But he has lots of health because he's a boss fight. OK GG not bad it's ok very ok mediocre.
