1/5 ★ – elk's review of Sable.
It's about time for the BOTW clones to start coming out and personally I think the subgenre that BOTW popularized still hasn't been used properly yet. Is sable going to break that curse? No! Sable is like a game made with the concept first and gameplay ideas later. Sure the art style is nice and the designs of the characters are cool, but they didn't put enough effort into making the game fun to play. If I wanted to look at nice deserts in cool art styles id prefer if my hoverbike functioned properly instead of going 3 miles a year and veering up and down and having the wings clip into mountains and stick me in there. Yeah I was interested in the beginning but once the game opens and you get the bike, the small problems became unignorable
and hey my review may seem harsh. But the soul they put into the game shows at points. You just go around the desert, doing literally whatever you want with no real goal. You solve problems for people and do quests, go to this place and solve the puzzle on this structure. Sometimes it's relaxing. Mostly boring. Your main method of transport is the hovering motorcycle which you can sort of customize but let's be real it does nothing. It's basically the same bike but with 1 of 3 stats increased. There's no response from the sand from your movement or the bike's. It would have been cool to see the sand shift around or footsteps or something. But instead, it feels very stagnant.
The animations being a lower fps is a cool idea but it gets really irritating to look at, especially since the movement isn't smooth and you can only go forward and diagonally. So are the character models like doom sprites or something? Sometimes the art style can actually get overstuffed and muddy, mostly in the towns at nighttime.
Didn't even mention the technical issues and bugs. My pc ran it decently but there were major frame dips for no real reason. My professional opinion? Bad! Elk medal of GARBAGE!!!!
