2/5 ★ – enovo15's review of Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered.
Played in 2022
Assassin’s Creed: Liberation was underwhelming from start to finish, and with no real ties to the main series, can be skipped, although it does have some decent missions and ideas. The setting in the game is good and bad, taking place mostly in New Orleans around the time of the American Revolution, which was the good, and the nearby bayou, which was the bad. New Orleans was your typical Assassin’s Creed city to explore, but the bayou was essentially a swamp with various islands and way too much water that made getting around the area a real hassle. The protagonist Aveline is pretty good as well. The story in this game is mediocre at best, but did have some bright spots, and the same can be said for the missions. The most interesting idea brought to the table for this game was the inclusion of various personas. Aveline could change outfits between the Assassin, the Slave, and the Lady, each having their own abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and even specific missions tied to them. This concept was fun for the most part, adding a new layer of strategy to how things could be approached, but was somewhat annoying as you could only change personas at certain spots on the map. My biggest complaint about this game is how poorly it played compared to the other games in the series. I get that this was originally a game for handheld consoles, but I encountered numerous bugs and normal gameplay seemed unresponsive at times. The lower gameplay quality and totally separate story from other games makes this a very forgettable experience that doesn’t add anything to the franchise. You won’t miss out on any major story points for the franchise if you skip this entry.
