3.5/5 ★ – enovo15's review of Gotham Knights.

Played in 2023 Gotham Knights probably got treated too harshly, but being the first Batman game since the Arkham Series and from the developers behind Arkham Origins (which is fantastic and highly underrated), it had a lot of high expectations. While Gotham Knights is definitely not up to the same level as any of the Arkham Games, it is for sure a fun game and a solid story set in the the Batman universe. The game has a big focus on co-op play with each person taking on the role of Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl or Red Hood. I played the game solo and enjoyed it, so I’d assume playing co-op with friends would be even more enjoyable than the experience I had. The gameplay loop was very creative and a lot of fun at first, but got repetitive after a while. Essentially, each night is a new patrol for crime fighting, where you as whichever member of the bat family you choose can go to the location of the main story, a side quest if available, or a variety of crimes taking place. When you’re done with whatever activities you want to do for the night, you can return to the base and that ends your night. It was a really cool way to simulate a night out fighting crime, but eventually it became the same crimes to stop over and over again and they got more challenging as you progressed in levels and gear by just making the enemies tankier and able to dodge pretty much all of your attacks instead of different and more challenging enemies. The only real complaint I have about the game was the technical issues I ran into. A few times throughout the game I ran into glitches where the game would essentially run in slow motion and I couldn’t do anything without an extreme delay. This generally happened during combat with large group of enemies, but it made the fight extremely difficult until you could take down a few enemies and the frame rate picked back up to normal. Overall, Gotham Knights is a good time with a solid story and gameplay that would be most enjoyable playing in co-op. This is a solid game all around, but the expectations put on it based on the Arkham series hurt this game since it doesn’t reach the level that series reached.
