4/5 ★ – ephemeriis's review of Moons of Madness.
Moons of Madness is a fun little Lovecraftian romp on Mars.
Moons of Madness is an adventure game in the same vein as Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle - although, to be fair, not of the same caliber. This means that the gameplay revolves around collecting items and solving puzzles. There are monsters and you can die, but this is not a survival horror game. For the most part you just wander around Mars uncovering the story. Think of it like a walking simulator with failure states.
Moons of Madness does a terrific job of building suspense. Lots of creepy atmosphere. Not a whole lot of sudden jump-scares to release the tension. Lots of half-glimpsed things around the edge of the screen. It very effectively conveyed the idea that my character might not be wholly-sane.
It took me about 7 hours to finish my first play-through, and I feel like I got my money's worth at $20. There's still a couple achievements left for me to earn... And likely an alternate ending... But I don't think I'm likely to re-play it any time soon. While enjoyable, the game was very linear, and doesn't offer much replay value.
