3.5/5 ★ – evasglory's review of Broforce.
From the beginning to the end, Broforce had me chuckling, giggling, and sometimes even laugh out louding. The comedy in this game is great and even though it is very reminiscent of the humor back in 2015, a lot of it still holds up well. My favorite part was when the game stops and focuses on this one terrorist's backstory and shows his entire life flashing before his eyes and immediately he fucking dies. It was great and I kinda wished they attempted that kind of really absurd humor in the rest of the game, not that it wasn't already funny.
I really like how you acquire more bros throughout the game and your bro is randomized upon death and upon freeing a BOW (Brosener of War). The variety in the different bros allows the game not to become stale and repetitive too quickly. However, some bros are more fitted for certain jobs and level designs than other bros (and some bros are simply better or worse altogether), making it feel like more of a roll of the dice that decides how well you perform in a level rather than your skill being the major factor. It's clear that they did a lot of things to try and avoid this, so it's certainly not as big of a deal as it could have been, but it's still a bit frustrating when you get a bad bro and just end up worse off just because of the bro you got. Similarly, it seems the bosses weren't designed to really withstand the amount of variety in kits across bros. A lot of bros won't be as good for fighting a certain boss and it'll be annoying dying over and over again, but as soon as you get the right bro you can instantly cheese it and win. To me, this sucked all the sense of achievement and victory I would've got out of beating it regularly, as it felt like I kept dying only because I wasn't getting the right bro.
The game can also get frustrating the further into it you go. Once they introduce the enemy types beyond the human terrorists, it gets a lot more cumbersome trying to navigate through the levels without being killed by something you didn't really see coming or just couldn't avoid, and the problem is worse with certain bros.
Aside from the unbalanced broage, the thing that bothered me the most about Broforce is how bad it is at conveying information. Often, the game will suddenly stop (like the terrorist scene I mentioned before) to show you something ahead. For example, the game needs to show you that the terrorist and non-human enemy types are hostile towards each other, so it shows you a short scene of them fighting each other.
The scenes
- are usually poorly scripted, so occasionally the game will stop you to show you nothing useful to you if something has gone wrong with what was supposed to happen (e.g. you prematurely killed one of the enemies that was supposed to partake in the scene).
- are sometimes not useful at all, as it just shows you a new enemy type you could have just looked at yourself if you went two steps forwards.
- play even if you had to start the level over, making them annoying to get through after you've already seen it.
Broforce also does not tell you what abilities new bros have, making it a guessing game as you waste the limited slots you have trying to figure it out. Some are self-explanatory like the first bro you play as who has grenades as the slot icons and has the ability is to throw grenades. Some you need to understand the reference to know what their ability does like Broden, who is based off of Raiden from the Mortal Kombat franchise and does his signature special move from the game. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat so I was able to guess what it did. Others just give you no information at all (or just fall into the previous category and I didn't understand the reference) like this one bro who shoots out some red in front of him while a woman appears in his bottom-left portrait. I had no idea what this did so I never used it until I assumed it would be useful for the final boss, which it really wasn't all too much. A little animation or something when you get a new bro that tells you what their ability and primary fire does would have been nice and would have made playing as a lot of the bros much less annoying.
I've complained a lot about Broforce but overall I really enjoyed my experience with it. It's charming, funny, fun, and chaotic while still being a mostly competent platforming run 'n gun. I played it solo, but I imagine experiencing the chaos with friends makes it a lot more enjoyable. Either way, I really like this game, so I definitely recommend it if you're into the kinda stuff Broforce has to offer.
