1/5 ★ – evasglory's review of My Name is You and it's the only unusual thing in my life.
My Name is You and it's the only unusual thing in my life is a great example of why titles shouldn't be complete sentences. Jokes aside, I really didn't like this game. I usually don't like people who disregard visual novels for being too simple and lacking substance, but this game really knocked it out of the park with how boring and slow every single part of this game is. There is very little going on on the screen at any particular time. The aesthetic looks like it could be cool in theory, however it is so underutilized that I fear that it remains a theory and nothing more.
Generally, I believe video games should have a reason for existing, for being a video game with interactive elements rather than a movie or a book or some other medium. This is especially true for visual novels, as they lack standard gameplay that other genres have built into them. It's a huge reason why I love visual novels, because it's harder to justify their existence and thus more creative narratives, gameplay elements, and insights into what we can call video games. My Name is You utterly fails at justifying its existence as a video game. There are choices to be made that lead to different paths, sure, but so do Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style YouTube series such as In Space With Markiplier, which has much much more to actually look at and experience.
I guess what I'm trying to say is don't buy this game if you like games. My Name is You would work a million times better as a YouTube series a la In Space With Markiplier. There simply isn't enough here to warrant it being a video game, and one that costs money at that.
I have more, minor complaints, such as it taking too long just to get to a choice you want to try again, or how the music that plays in endings is bugged and will continue playing if you exit out before you reach the end, or how the ending music is so much louder than the actual game, or how certain things are brought up seemingly randomly in the story and never mentioned again, but the main point is that it's boring and not worth the price or your time.
