3.5/5 ★ – fabiomsa's review of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Assassins Creed Odyssey brings us the freedom of a open world and the richness of a narrative driven game. The combat is crazy fun and gearing is meaningful, with the skill pathing feeling impactful. You choose your way to play, both stealthy and in your face paths are viable. You can create different playstyles and further enhance them with the synergies the gear provides. Upgrading is neither too easy nor too hard, just in the right spot. Side quests are interesting enough to not feel like a chore, and the main story keeps us hungry for the next chapter. I felt like the main story was a bit shortlived, ending before fully unveilleing the cult or the artifacts, wich are your two other stories. Even tough i accept this, because even tough the personal story has a closure, the world is more important than you, and is still in danger, so get to work. It's a different formula of handling story, empowering the other two branches of story, so it's refreshing. There are also alot of systems put in place to assure that you never run out of things to do. They get progressively introduced as you progress further in the story. This include ship content, mercenaries, gladiator arena, cultists, artifacts, godlike monsters and some epic bosses. The uncovering of Cultists and pursuit of artifacts tie directly into the story wich makes them a motivation to complete. There is also a nice tempo between story and exploration. Mainly you will rush trough the story allways searching for more but sometimes you don't have the level or resources and you are forced to explore to achieve them. Also known as story gating, it forces you explore the vastness and richness of the world. Wich can be good or bad. Sometimes it get's repetitive but it has some nice little gems included. The scenarios are rich and varied, from greece various metropolis, to mountains, beaches, sunny hayfields, dense forests, starry city nights, temples, mythical creatures lairs or even forgotten athen guettos. Graphically the game is gorgeous and again, rich. It's one of those games where i could go crazy with screenshots. And parkour is just a joy to perform, as usual. The character development is average, alexios is mostly all the same, with some interesting sparks here and there. Some side kicks takes the spotlight and make the game feel refreshing and alive (im looking at you sokrates). The voice acting is well done enough. The score is decent and enhances the immersion. Also, it is based on actually history wich i feel adds alot of immersion. Visiting key places that defined history as we know it today is the cherry on the top of the cake.
