4/5 ★ – firstTimer1598's review of Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition.
Review for the PC version. Slight spoilers ahead.
What's great -
1. Great graphics and soundtrack. The radio songs are really good.
2. Open world does a good job of feeling like a living breathing world. There are many factions, many in conflict with each other. You also have many companions to choose from, each of them is different and good in their own way, be it their personality or playstyle.
3. Excellent side missions.
4. Pretty good as a first-person shooter. VATS works well, but not really necessary.
5. Weapons and armour modding is great in the game and can significantly change your playstyle.
The not-so-great parts -
1. The main campaign is good but short and restrictive. You *have to choose* one faction to side with and the multiple endings are not really different, except for one.
2. While the story is good, it conflicts with the open-world structure.
3. Third person movement feels clunky and weird. The camera basically is stuck behind the character when you have your weapons drawn and are not aiming.
4. The settlement system feels tacked on and not necessary to complete the main campaign, except for a few missions.
5. The user interface is optimised for consoles and navigating it feels clunky on KB + M (keyboard + mouse).
6. You cannot create /craft weapons and armour from scratch.
7. Bugs and glitches. Though not game-breaking. The game did crash on me once or twice.
Despite the flaws, this game gets a 4/5 from me. This game also has an excellent modding community and there are tons of mods available online, which fix the not-so-great parts of the game + add new content and/or overhaul the entire game. With mods installed this game can be one of the best games ever made.
