4/5 ★ – funtimewallacegames's review of The Caligula Effect 2.
The first Caligula Effect game, is a game I fondly enjoyed and often recommend to people looking for a hidden gem in the JRPG genre!
I was excited of the announcement of the second game but was very weary due to sequels often falling short of the original work. After playing the game, I can happily say that Caligula Effect 2 improves on majority of the negative complaints of the first game, and turns the music and story up a few notches!
Combat in this game is similar to the original but with a lot more polish. The first game was initially one of my favorite combat systems in a JRPG but this one definitely takes the cake! The combat can be a learning curve for some people (especially if you haven't played the first game, which I'd highly recommend you do so) but is very rewarding once you learn it and never got boring to me.
The soundtrack is very good for a game with a lower budget and often times I saw myself listening to music whenever I wasn't playing the game.
The only downside towards the game is the visuals, but it doesn't put a huge damper on my love for the game, especially with it being a lower budget title. If you're a fan of the first game, you'll definitely love this title and if you haven't played the series I couldn't recommend it enough!
