4.5/5 ★ – gabicus's review of Sifu.
“I can do better than that” is the consistent thought I had throughout my play through of Sifu. Do better. Be quicker. On paper Sifu is a short game, five levels and five bosses, that’s it. You even get massive shortcuts after you first beat a level. But Sifu isn’t concerned with having you simply beat a level, it wants you to master it.
I found this gameplay idea really compelling! As long as I mastered the first level, I would never have to replay it. And so I did. I took my time mastering each level, making progress ever so steadily. In that sense, Sifu is a game that really rewards your time. Even a failed run can always be rewarding, whether that’s XP or just knowledge and practice.
I’m really excited to work towards the true ending now and I have feeling that’ll put it over the fence for me at a 5/5. As it stands, the story falls a little weak at the end but I know there’s more if I get the true ending so.
