4/5 ★ – gabicus's review of The Forgotten City.
The Forgotten City is one of (if not) the best written games I’ve ever played. And also one of my favorite time loop games, rivaling Outer Wilds. The storyline in this game is the crowning jewel, it’s so freaking good. It’s the kind of story that has zero plot holes and leaves you so impressed that someone chose to tell this story through the medium of video games.
I obviously won’t talk spoilers but have to mention that I love the ending and managed to get the best ending on my first try, it was deeply satisfying. The central gameplay is mainly navigating dialogue options. Its a testament to the writing that this never feels repetitive. It goes a lot deeper then typical Bethesda dialogue options too, you end up having whole philosophical arguments with characters. Best way to describe this is that I always thought twice about which dialogue to choose and where it would go, it actually made me think.
There’s some light combat in this game that kinda didn’t need to be in this and is one thing that keeps it from being a 5/5. I also would’ve liked a bit more variety on the different endings since I went back to do the other three. Regardless, I think Forgotten City is an amazing debut for a small three man studio. You can tell this was a passion project and I can’t wait to see what these guys come up with next with more funding in their pocket.
