3/5 ★ – gocki's review of Aegis Defenders.
Short: art is great, gameplay feels fresh, but should be played in multiplayer.
In Detail:
I think this game is intended to play with a second person. Aegis Defenders is a mix of 2D-action-platformer and tower defense mechanics and felt like a new, fresh approach to me. However while playing it starts feeling quite tedious, because you have to switch between two characters all the time to build the towers.
The art is beautiful and colorful. They said themself, their art is "Studio Ghibli inspired". The ruins of the world, overtaken by nature, definetly feels like a Ghibli setting to me, mixed with elements from some other japanese sources. Especially the protagonists could be straight from Ghibli's movie Nausicaä who got a hair cut from a Final Fantasy 7 hair dresser. While the game's plot covers some serious topics, the fun dialougs still creates a friendly atmosphere.
I especially liked the environment. The camera is rather far away from the player, so that you see a lot of the environment, making it feel big and overwhelming to me.
