I was rather lukewarm when the game was announced. I remembered Gorn as a simple, dismemberment-sandbox from YouTube, and I thought Devolvers had done the same thing, only slapping a sequel label, to keep the VR audience in mind. But how wrong I was.. It often happens that the original game loses out to time, I bought both parts in a bundle, played through all the arenas, and I can confidently say that the first "Gorn", compared to the sequel, is just a conceptual techno demo, and now there is no point in playing it,
The sequel feels three times more fun, and even if you (like me) aren't a fan of the "entertain yourself" genre, you simply can't tear yourself away from this vibes. Firstly, the physics have improved, and you can't imagine how cool it is to hold the bendable weapons in your hands ā they really feel "inflatable," and that's indescribable cool. Secondly, you no longer have to beat your enemies with all your might (not to mention technical details like more grapple points on weapons), You can simply PUSH them with a sword into a pit or onto some trap, just push them, it sounds boring but it's fun, it's relaxing but you still feel like a "gladiator", its kind of kindly massacre experience,
Because the arenas have become a full-fledged story campaign, with different settings that unlock gradually. Each battlefield adds simple traps that add to the gameplay, like a large saw in the center, plants with poisonous stems, blood balls, lasers, or running bulls, all this is mortally dangerous both for you and for your enemies.
And they added a really rocking soundtrack, full-fledged bosses, and even firearms!! (though only at the end), the graphics are obviously prettier, but the stands in the distance are still pixelated, btw you can show the arena spectators a special finger, and this is a fully-fledged game mechanic with a dedicated button, yes, yes, and there are other minor QOL improvements, like you don't have to hold your weapon over your head for long to start, and saving yourself from a "black screen" (quick kill) is now much easier, annoying moments have been fixed.
Overall, congratulations to the multi-hands "Free Lives" studio, now better known for šš§š šš« š
šØšØš game. They found some guys from "Cortopia studios", handed them the original's core framework, and apparently helped make the game one of the most enjoyable VR experiences of all time, not to mention my personal top 2025.
š©.š¬. The only good thing about the first "Gorn" was there wolverine claws weapons at the end, oh yeah, that was super cool, but they didn't bring them back here, alas.
