5/5 ★ – guished_foobi's review of OMORI.

I am not saying this like I'm trying to brag, but it's very uncommon for me to cry at any kind of media. I don't know what it is or why, but it just doesn't happen much. It's not that I don't find myself connecting to the characters I watch / play / read about, it's just that crying is something I don't do incredibly often. With that said I full on sobbed at least three times throughout the duration of this game. Never before have I played a game that is such a fantastic combination of charm, terror, joy, and horror all wrapped into one. There really is nothing else like it I've ever seen. I've heard that Omori is heavily inspired by Earthbound and Mother 3, but I've never played those games to actually know. Even so, the retro style of graphics are well done but the animations that all look to be completely hand draw are genuinely beautiful. The rpg mechanics are fun, and add a lot of engagement above the usual ""just press one button and wait for your turn to come around again"" with several interesting mechanics (like the emotions and also your team up meter bar that slowly builds up over time). There were a few moments where the dungeon design lacked a little bit for me in areas like Sweetheart's Castle, but I never got to a point where I can say I wasn't having fun. However, above all else is the story. The story of Omori is one of the most interesting and engaging narratives I have experienced in a while. From the very start I was completely hooked and I never let go of the characters and their journeys. The story of Omori is at times beautiful and at others devastating. The range this title hits is truly commendable. I know I said it before but there really is nothing else like it. In my opinion this game is definitively a masterpiece.
