2/5 ★ – gumgy's review of The Walking Dead: Michonne.
unfortunately a pretty average spinoff game - not main series at least. spoilers as well.
pros:
- story and characters are compelling enough still
- gameplay loop is improving at this point in the series, at least in that the gameplay has started to evolve past quick-time events.
cons:
- VERY short, 3 episodes that last maybe an hour each. really stretching the limits of the term "miniseries"
- since the story is so short, you aren't able to make the significant connection with the characters that this game kinda relies on. the main hard-hitting decision in this game is supposed to be choosing to let go of the past (michonne's already dead children) for the future (the family she's been with the whole game). the game didn't give enough time or backstory with michonne's family to make me care about them at all - the decision was too easy in my opinion.
achievements for this game are just like the first 2 games, just get to the end and you'll have 100%.
the game is still more or less pretty good as a standalone game in the series. you can play this game before the main line ones, afterwards, or just not at all - there is nothing in this game that relates to the main line. it falls short in a couple of areas listed above, and the general length of it all makes it tough to recommend, but if you really like the main series walking dead telltale games then this certain scratches an itch. i wouldn't even consider buying this for the full price of $15, but it goes on sale for $6 during most sales, and can be justified at that price.
