2.5/5 ★ – hunkypet's review of Heavenly Sword.

Ah Ninja Theory a supremely talented development company that do make unique and interesting games at the very least. Heavenly Sword is so close to being great but falters just a few to many times for it to even be classed a hidden gem... though it’s on the cusp. I’ll start with the main positive. The game looks absolutely incredible for a 2007 released PS3 game, it’s nearly unfathomable how they managed to get it looking this good so soon after the PS3’s release. And sadly, that’s where the positives end. There are strong points left to discuss though they are equally muddled with problems. For example: • It’s a mish mash of genres that never really pays off, it’s a god of war clone, then a RTS, then you have these god awful platforming sequences oh and some bizarre FPS type scenarios. I’m all for variety.. thought not when any particular part pulls it off well. • The story is a strange cluttered mess, but does have some intrigue. When ever you start to get pulled in the wildly differing voice acting drags you straight back out. • The combat is a god of war clone, with some unique stances you have to master.. it does the job but it never really clicked for me. •Finally the last boss was a joke. He doesn’t deserve much more acknowledgment than that. This game has many fans, and for all the negative things I’ve just said about it bizarrely, I don’t hate it. I want to like it, even love it but it just feels like Ninja Theory were so close to something special but maybe we’re not mature enough as a developer to deliver on it. If you have been curious about this game, sitting on the fence wondering if you’ll like it.. my advice is to try it, it’s weird, clunky and strange but maybe it just clicks for you. Played on PS3
