3.5/5 ★ – hunkypet's review of Mad Max.
Ah Mad Max, a game so frequent of a hidden gems list it maybe as well be renamed - Mad Max: The Hidden Gem.
I didn’t stumble across it that way though, I adored the movie, so the moment I heard of a game to expand the universe I was there.
I decided not to follow any media leading up to it and day one buy it. I’m so happy I did, because what I played was a genuinely spectacular and memorable experience.
A third person, beat ‘em up/vehicular combat open world hybrid, it really shouldn’t work but it does so well. Avalanche did a fine job in making the hand to hand combat and the vehicular combat both equally enjoyable and deep.
You can only say so much about Mad Max before you have to talk about it’s visuals. Wow, the game was one of the best looking games released at the time and even today looks mighty impressive. The vehicles, environments and most importantly the weather/storm effects are seriously top notch.
It’s not perfect though, it’s an open world game and it pinches a few ideas from most Ubisoft type games, clearing out enemy camps and trivial padding does wear thin pretty quickly.
When all is said and done I think there are far more positives than negatives and even now after making it to so many hidden gems or unappreciated games lists - I still don’t think Mad Max gets the recognition or credit it deserves.
