3/5 ★ – hunkypet's review of Vikings: Wolves of Midgard.

Viking: Wolves of Midgard is somewhat of a hidden gem. Think of it as a Diablo clone but a fairly decent one at that. From the same team that brought me one of my favourite lesser titles of last year - Shadows Awakenings, they manage to recapture the same satisfying gameplay loop but cut out much of the story elements. Whereas Shadow was more of a traditional RPG with Diablo style isometric looter combat thrown in, Viking is a diablo style hack and slash clone with light story elements thrown in instead. It has some nice production values, with detailed and interesting environments. The story is paper thin and shouldn’t be the main draw here. The upgrade system is fun and dynamic and the same goes for the wide variety of loot to discover. Unfortunately like Shadow there is a 30FPS cap but after an adjustment period you do learn to accept it. You should do aswell because while the combat isn’t the deepest thing in the world it certainly has some meat to it and is incredibly addictive seeing what loot you’ll find next or combos to chain together. Every level is very replay-able due to enemies always re-spawning after you complete the level. More than anything the game is good, addicting fun. Few games kept me hooked and enticed as well as Vikings did. It’s a lesser known game that has real merit and deserves abit more attention if you’re up for some hack n slash fun. Played on PS4
