2.5/5 ★ – isaiahbot's review of Battlefield V.
Got a wild hair and decided to give this another try since it’s free on EA Play and it’s core gameplay honestly isn’t bad. By comparison to BF1 which not only do I find to simply be a great multiplayer experience, but also have such a consistent and potently gritty warzone atmosphere, this one is absolutely lacking the vision and passion put into BF1. Stuff like the opening sequence is a clear indicator of what I mean as it’s aiming for the same formula as BF1’s opening, but is executed so poorly and comes across as disingenuous by comparison to BF1’s meticulously crafted and meaningful meat grinder of an introduction to life on a battlefield that I honestly can’t even remember parts of BFV’s short opening.
But I was also surprised by the fun I was having in some of the rounds I played. I was getting on really good squads every round of Conquest or Breakthrough, and I found that a decent amount of maps have pretty solid layouts with funneling and strongpoints to hold. When the fortification system works, it works well, but I wouldn’t want it to return as-is in another entry since it really messes with the destruction system. Vehicle combat (particularly tanks) is great and requires the most skill to effectively use out of any BF I’ve played. Customizations, both loadouts and cosmetics, are fine, I guess. But it’s really dumb that you can’t save loadouts per-country, and obviously it being an EA game, the progression system is grindy as shit and there’s aspects to this whole thing that are shit but idk I kinda had enough fun with it that I might hop back on at some point.
