3/5 ★ – jackohdee's review of The Yukon Trail.

This here's another exciting product from Mecc! Okay well, exciting might not be the right word - but while I played a little bit of Oregon Trail on the school computers, it was this visit to the Klondike that won my heart. Having a fully-voiced experience with tonnes of characters made for a great edu-tainment game back in the day. So many of these line readings are seared onto my mind. I can never remember my dad's birthday but I always know the exact tone and timbre with which the Mountie greets you when he says "Welcome to Canada." It's a surprisingly unpredictable journey each time, with more random chance built in then you might expect. Unfortunately that basically just comes down to how often your partner is going to sprain their ankle on the journey from Dyea, but still. It kept me on the edge of my seat on that long trek up the Chilkoot Trail. More than anything, revisiting this game (following my first read of Call of the Wild) has made me realize how much I love the dramatic aesthetic of the Klondike Gold Rush. I'm dreaming of a Red Dead-scale experience where you've traded out your horse for a team of sled dogs, staking your claim and building a golden empire for yourself in the cutthroat north. But as Jack London tells you on the streets of Dawson, "there are riches all around you. Not all glitter like gold. Live life to the fullest and you will die a millionaire." Hell ya.
